PLEASE DO NOT USE ANY OF MY DRAWINGS AS A REFERENCE, DON'T DISTRIBUTE, REUPLOAD OR USE MY WORK IN ANY WAY WITHOUT MY WRITTEN PERMISSION!!!!

facts:
in the middle age not so many people could write or read like nowadays. But it's wrong to think that only nobles learnt it (sometimes workers knew it better than the king ;-P) !!! Everyone needed to know a little how to because of contracts, cards...etc.
In the late middle ages more schools came up (like cloister schools, town schools, latin schools...etc) and teachers teached in front of lots of people on the market places, so also even poor people could get a bit of education. But it's wrong to think, that education was ONLY connected with writing or reading!!! Again: to be educated you did not really need to know the letters! I know it's a bit complicated, ^^; but we have to recall that these were different times than today.
But it wasn't a given that people could read and write at the same time!! Some people could read, but not write, others could write, but not read! :D This is caused by the different ways of writing and different types of speaking and grammar. The middle ages had no standard languages, there existed many dialects of english, german, french... etc. Even latin had different types xD. So it was possible that maybe an English monk could only understand texts in his own dialect and could only read the type of letters he learned to read. And if he said: "I cannot read", it didn't mean that he was stupid, he just did't know the writing on the sheet.
For nobles it was more important to fight, education was subordinate. But clerics had to read and write, they were also the ones who brought education to the people.

Charlemagne (747/748-814) was an analphabet. He tried to learn writing during his lifetime, but he described it as very stressful. But he did many things for a better education, he even allowed to copy heathenish texts and created a uniformy writing system, to make the reading of texts easier ;-)

Ed tries to talk xD
And Sir Dan uses his monocle xDDD
Dan is a little leery of our zombie pals at first, but see what a big heart he has for his fans!!! ... But I guess he has no clue what fans, a fanclub or even deviantART are . Nevermind, we got an autograph from Sir Dan personally!!! :boogie:

The zombies in the second panel, from left to right:
Chibi belongs to :iconephah:, Ed is mine and Greg belongs to :iconevilblot:. They are OC's, do NOT use them!!!!
